Description:What are—what have been and what might yet be—alternatives and opposing visions to Zionism? How has anti-Zionism appeared in intellectual debates both within and outside of the Jewish community around the world? Scholarly discussions of anti-Zionism are too frequently restricted to debates internal to Jewish thought and as the domain of Jewish or Israel Studies. Alternatively, Zionism, as an idea, is often framed as the impetus for Palestinian action, while Palestinian ideas are rarely considered or taken seriously. We hope this meeting will provide the opportunity to more clearly articulate and rigorously engage with the idea(s) of anti-Zionism both within and beyond Jewish and Palestinian frames. Anti-Zionism has historically been connected to anti-colonial nationalist liberation movements, to Third Worldism, and other popular mobilizations in and around the Global South, which has legacies that are visible all around us today. Currently anti-Zionism is demonized and criminalized in the United States and other countries in the West, from Germany and France to the United Kingdom and Canada. This conference—continuing and expanding discussions that began at a sister event held last year in Toronto—explores the problematic of anti-Zionism, refracting the topic through various disciplinary, political, and cultural lenses, bringing together leading scholars to address this crucial and increasingly embattled conversation.
