Elaine Scarry is the Cabot Professor of Aesthetics and the General Theory of Value at Harvard University. She is the author of many books, including The Body in Pain, Dreaming by the Book, On Beauty and Being Just, and Thermonuclear Monarchy. Her work addresses a dizzying array of topics, especially having to do with aesthetics and political philosophy. She is an authority on social contract theory, political violence, and nuclear disarmament; she is also a scholar of the imagination, the philosophy of perception, and the experience of beauty. She is a winner of the Capote Prize in literary criticism.
