Jeffrey T. Lawrence (2014) has won the International Association for Inter-American Studies Award for the best master’s thesis or dissertation in Inter-American Studies completed in 2013 or 2014. Dr. Lawrence's dissertation is titled The Experiencer and the Reader in Twentieth-Century Literatures of the Americas. It studies the centrality of discourses about experience and reading in modern and contemporary US and Latin American literature.  Approaching “experience“ as a keyword in Raymond Williams’ sense, it suggest that the term, and its accompanying expectation of first-hand authorial knowledge based on in situ immersion, became a contested but fertile concept for twentieth-century writers throughout the Americas.
